Paula Carrara

She is a director, performer, and vocal coach, active in contemporary creation since 2001, with a research practice focused on the voice as bodily materiality and as a bio-political construct. She holds a degree in Theatre Pedagogy (2007) and earned a Master’s degree in Performance Studies – Artist Training for the Performing Arts (2015) from the University of São Paulo.

Throughout her career, she has worked within São Paulo’s collective theatre scene, participated in the Urban Musical Movements project directed by João das Neves, and coordinated artistic residencies at Casa das Rosas and the Câmara de Cultura.

Her directing projects include La Fora (Brazil, 2019), With All My Noise (Con Tutto il Mio Rumore, Italy, 2020), The Song of the Women of the Asphalt (Il Canto delle Donne dell’Asfalto, Italy, 2019, MUDEC Milan), and Romeo and Juliet in Padova’s Street (Italy, 2019, NoLo Fringe Festival).

She was selected for the Women Opera Makers Workshop coordinated by director Katie Mitchell and was invited to take part in the Professional Days within the programme of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

She was a guest lecturer at the University of São Paulo (2012) and has taught in theatre schools and cultural institutions in Brazil, France, Italy, Cyprus, Switzerland, and Portugal, including Pinacoteca di Brera (IT), Il Lazzaretto (IT), the CEM Dance Centre (PT), and Fundação das Artes de São Caetano (BR).

Her research on body–voice integration has been supported by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture and CNPq. In 2016 she published the book Body Voice Listening: Reflections on the Practice of the Actor.

In 2022 she founded AUTENTICA – Voice and Communication and began publishing the monthly newsletter Co(spirare), dedicated to voice research and practice.

She has taken part in professional training experiences led by: Anatolij Vassiliev, Enzo Cosimi, Mohamed El Khatib, Chris Watson, Thomas Richards, Maud Robart, Mikhail Karikis, Wagner Barbosa, Andre Barroso, Fabio Cintra, Wania Storolli, Maria Thais, Antonio Januzzeli, Sophia Neuparth, Peter Michael Dietz, Lu Favoretto, Tica Lemos, Sandro Borelli, Francesca Della Monica, Sabine Uitz, Chiara Guidi, and Davide Tidoni.

Among her recent works are CASSANDRA we have a problem, an intimate sound exploration of the myth of Cassandra; Priam et Hécube veulent pleurer with Cie des Faux in Lyon; and her performance in Radio Pentothal by Ruggero Franceschini, presented at the LIVE Festival of Zona K.
Nel corso della sua carriera ha lavorato nella scena del teatro di gruppo paulistano, ha partecipato al progetto Movimenti Musicali Urbani direto da João das Neves e ha coordinato occupazioni artistiche presso Casa das Rosas e la Câmara de Cultura.

Tra i suoi progetti registici figurano La Fora (Brasile, 2019), Con Tutto il Mio Rumore (Italia, 2020), Il Canto delle Donne dell’Asfalto (Italia, 2019, MUDEC Milano) e Romeo and Giulietta in Padova’s Street (Italia, 2019, NoLo Fringe Festival).

E’ stata selezionata al Women Opera Makers Workshop, coordinato dalla regista Katie Mitchell, ed è invitata a prendere parte ai Professional Days all'interno del programma del Festival d'Aix-en-Provence.

È stata docente invitata presso l’Università di San Paolo (2012) e ha insegnato in in scuole di teatro e spazi culturali in Brasile, Francia, Italia, Cipro, Svizzera e Portogallo come la Pinacoteca di Brera (IT), Il Lazzaretto (IT), il centro di danza CEM (PT) e la Fundação das Artes de São Caetano (BR).

La sua ricerca sull’integrazione corpo-voce è stata sostenuta dal Ministero della Cultura del Brasile e dal CNPQ e nel 2016 pubblica il libro Body Voice Listening: Reflections on the Practice of the Actor.

Nel 2022 crea AUTENTICA voce e comunicazione e publica mensilmente Co(spirare), una newsletter dedicata alla voce.
