The text talks about two main themes: the increasing incidence of dementia in Switzerland and a theatrical production on Alzheimer’s directed by Volker Hesse. In Switzerland, around 146,500 people currently suffer from dementia, with 31,375 new cases each year. 66% of patients are female and 5% develop the disease before the age of 65. It is expected that by 2050, the number will rise to about 315,400 people. More than two thirds of patients in nursing homes in large Swiss cities have advanced dementia, usually caused by cerebral stroke, Parkinson’s disease or, more frequently, Alzheimer’s disease.

The Dimitri Academy, under the direction of Volker Hesse, has created a play that explores life in an imaginary clinic for Alzheimer’s patients. The production is based on the writings of gerontopsychiatrist Christoph Held, who stresses the need for a change in the way society sees dementia patients. The performance aims to pay tribute to patients, staff and family members through the expression of the body, voice and emotions.

Director Volker Hesse is known for his many acclaimed stage productions. The team involves different professionals in roles such as choreography, puppet making, music and more. The clinic staff faces difficult nights and emotional moments, while the performers portray a range of emotions and situations, from chaos to tenderness.
